Tamil Nadu deals with devastating floods; CM seeks national calamity declaration

Tamil Nadu faces a severe crisis as heavy rains continue to batter the southern districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin, claiming 10 lives and prompting widespread disruptions. In response to the unfolding tragedy, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena declared holidays for schools and colleges in Thirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thuthukudi districts.

The unexpected intensity of the downpour, exceeding predictions by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has led to a surge in casualties, primarily due to incidents like wall collapses and electrocution.

The gravity of the situation prompted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urgently requesting the declaration of the calamity as a national disaster. Stalin sought immediate financial assistance, proposing a relief fund of 7,300 crore to address the pressing needs of affected residents.

The chief minister highlights the unprecedented nature of the damage, citing the historical severity of rainfall in the southern districts. As rescue and relief operations continue, with multiple teams and resources deployed, the state anticipates further support to mitigate the impact and rebuild the affected regions.
