Bastauli ‘B block’ area under Ghazipur police station on December 15, a 45-year-old woman named Kusum, employed as a maid, was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Kamal Gautam, a 45-year-old tailor.
The details of the incident came to light on Sunday when Kusum succumbed to her injuries at Lohia Hospital. Kamal Gautam is currently on the run, leaving authorities in pursuit. According to the victim's son, an altercation between the couple escalated, leading Kamal to brutally assault Kusum with a heavy wooden log.
The son further revealed that Kusum's attempt to intervene resulted in their 15-year-old daughter being thrown from the first floor, causing severe injuries to her legs and hands.Local police personnel from the Bhootnath police outpost failed to file a report or take immediate action when informed about the horrifying event.
This lapse in immediate response has drawn criticism from Madhu Garg, the national joint secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), of which the victim was a member. A written complaint has been submitted by the victim's family, and the police are now awaiting the postmortem report before proceeding with the registration of an FIR.
A subsequent FIR has been filed under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 304 (culpable homicide). AIDWA workers expressed regret that immediate police intervention could have potentially prevented the accused from absconding. The victim's neighbor and AIDWA district president, Susheela, who accompanied Kusum to the hospital, emphasized the urgency of prompt police action in such cases.
