Rajya Sabha suspends MP Derek O'Brien over 'ignoable misconduct'

TMC MP Derek O'Brien faced suspension for the remainder of the winter session on Thursday, citing "ignoble misconduct" in the Rajya Sabha. The suspension motion was adopted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who accused O'Brien of disrupting proceedings by entering the Well of the House, continuously shouting slogans, and gesturing at the Chair.

The disruption occurred as O'Brien and Opposition members raised slogans, demanding Union Home Minister Amit Shah's presence in Parliament to make a statement on the security breach that led to two persons jumping into the Chamber of the House from the visitors' gallery. He stayed inside the House despite being asked to leave.

On Wednesday, Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D -- two men jumped inside the Lok Sabha and blew off a canister which released yellow-coloured smoke

In a parallel development, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has suspended eight security personnel in connection with the security breach incident that took place in the Lok Sabha. Opposition members in the Lok Sabha demanded the resignation of Amit Shah, with some reaching the Well of the House to raise slogans.

Speaker Om Birla expressed concern about the incident, emphasizing that all members shared the same concern. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh urged heightened vigilance in issuing passes for entry into Parliament, acknowledging the need for enhanced precautions following the security breach. Singh noted that similar incidents had occurred in the old Parliament building, but assured that every precaution would be taken in the future.
