India joins global consensus; Backs UNGA resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza conflict

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), India cast its vote in support of a resolution urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The resolution, adopted during an emergency special session on Tuesday, saw overwhelming support from 153 nations, with 10 voting against and 23 abstentions.

The measure, introduced by Egypt, emphasized compliance with international law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians, and called for the unconditional release of all hostages.

India, aligning with the majority, voted in favor of the resolution, marking a shift from its previous abstention in October on a similar matter. The UNGA session also witnessed unsuccessful amendments proposed by Austria and the United States, which sought to address specific aspects of the conflict, including mentioning Hamas and condemning certain actions.

The resolution, invoking Article 99 of the UN Charter, acknowledged the letter by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging for international efforts to establish a humanitarian ceasefire. Israel's Ambassador to the UN argued against the ceasefire, asserting it would benefit terrorists, while the Security Council's recent failure to adopt a similar resolution heightened the urgency surrounding the situation.
