In a progressive move, the Bihar government has announced the implementation of Saheli Rooms in all middle and secondary schools in the Saran district, aimed at enhancing menstrual hygiene awareness among girl students. As part of this initiative, girl students will receive gifts, including sanitary pads, on their birthdays.
The primary objective is to address health concerns, reduce absenteeism due to menstruation, and ensure uninterrupted education for girl students. Bihar Education Project Director B. Kartikeya Dhanji has issued directives to establish Saheli Rooms, providing a space for rest and discussion on menstruation-related topics, along with access to sanitary napkin vending machines.
The Saheli Rooms, equipped with beds, chairs, and emergency uniforms, will offer a supportive environment for girls to rest during their menstrual cycles. Additionally, the rooms will feature an electric incinerator for the safe disposal of used pads.
Nodal teachers will conduct weekly meetings with girls, addressing health concerns and fostering discussions. The initiative also involves the collaboration of Women Development Corporation, UNICEF, and public representatives. The Saheli Rooms aim to empower girls, dispel myths about menstruation through informative wall displays, and encourage open conversations about women's health.
