TMC Protests and BJP's Symbolic Purification Stir Political Tensions in West Bengal Assembly
In a series of escalating events, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), West Bengal's ruling party, has been engaged in protests against the central government in the state assembly, in front of B.R. Ambedkar's statue. The situation took a dramatic turn when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, led by the Leader of Opposition, Subhendu Adhikari, resorted to symbolic purification of the assembly premises with Ganga water, sparking controversy and accusations of constitutional violations.
The protests initiated by the TMC have been ongoing for the past few days, with Thursday witnessing intensified demonstrations. However, on Friday BJP MLAs carried pitchers of Ganga water on their heads to the assembly premises, where they proceeded to purify the area by sprinkling the holy water.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay swiftly responded to the BJP's actions, condemning the purification ritual as a violation of the Constitution. Chattopadhyay further criticized the BJP, asserting that the incident sheds light on the party's attitude towards tribal society, labeling it as unprecedented politics in his many years of experience.
