Jammu and Kashmir hit by 5.8 magnitude earthquake, no casualties reported
In a dramatic turn of events during Tuesday's winter session, Speaker Biman Banerjee suspended opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari, marking the second such suspension after a similar incident in March last year. The move followed a series of contentious developments, including the BJP Parliamentary Party submitting a memorandum in the Assembly Secretary's chamber and an application filed by Sukumar Rai seeking a vote of no confidence against the Speaker.
BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh initiated the debate on Constitution Day by raising concerns about defection in the Assembly chamber. The Speaker responded by 'expunging' Ghosh's speech, removing it from the official minutes of the Assembly.
Subsequently, Subhendu Adhikari entered the discussion, stating that his remarks should not be 'uprooted.' In protest, he declared his refusal to participate in the Constitution Day discussion if his statement was 'expunged,' leaving the room.
During Adhikari's exit, Speaker Banerjee issued a warning about his behavior, stating that action would be taken according to the rules. Deputy Chief Tapas Roy from the ruling party proposed the suspension of Subhendu Adhikari, emphasizing that those unfamiliar with the Constitution should not participate in discussions. Speaker Banerjee, following the proposal, officially announced Adhikari's suspension from the ongoing session.
