Renowned economist Professor Nirmala Banerjee, who is the mother of Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, has passed away at the age of 87. Her demise comes after a severe head injury sustained on Tuesday night when she fell in her South Kolkata residence.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited her at the hospital and confirmed that Abhijit Banerjee was en route to Kolkata from the United States. Nirmala Banerjee, known for her significant contributions in the field of economics, was a professor at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences in Kolkata.
Professor Nirmala Banerjee was a highly respected economist with a remarkable career and legacy. Born Nirmala Patankar in Maharashtra, she studied at the prestigious London School of Economics. Her contributions to the field of economics were notable, and her published works, including books such as "Gender Impacts of Revenue Collection in India" and "Women Workers in the Unorganized Sector: Calcutta Experience," reflect her extensive research and expertise.
