In a major strategic move, the highly anticipated Bollywood action thriller, "Tiger 3," starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Emraan Hashmi, is all set to take the Indian box office by storm during the upcoming Diwali holiday weekend. The film has secured exclusive access to all 23 IMAX theaters across India for its grand release on Diwali in 2023. This remarkable development not only reflects the immense anticipation surrounding the film but also indicates the growing trend of Indian blockbusters outperforming Hollywood releases in the domestic market.
The decision to secure all IMAX theaters for "Tiger 3" has led to the displacement of "The Marvels," a Hollywood release initially scheduled for November 10. The move is based on the expectation of a colossal opening weekend during the Diwali festival. Bollywood expert Jatinder Singh emphasized how Indian mega-productions have consistently surpassed Hollywood blockbusters at the Indian box office, tracing the trend back to 1998 when even the iconic "Titanic" was outperformed by an Indian film, "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai."
The film, directed by Maneesh Sharma, is the third installment in the popular Tiger franchise and expands the YRF Spy Universe, following the success of "Tiger Zinda Hai" (2017), "War" (2019), and the recently released "Pathaan" (2023). "Tiger 3" features Emraan Hashmi as the antagonist and is expected to continue the success of the franchise while potentially introducing intriguing crossovers with other iconic characters from the Indian film industry.
This development underscores a broader shift in the dynamics of the Indian film industry, where homegrown films, both from Bollywood and Tollywood (Telugu-language cinema), have demonstrated their ability to not only dominate the domestic box office but also make a mark on the global stage. Films like "Dangal" and "RRR" have showcased India's cinematic prowess and storytelling on an international scale. "Tiger 3" is poised to continue this trend as it gears up for a sensational Diwali release, capturing the imagination of audiences both in India and beyond.
