Rajkummar Rao, the acclaimed actor renowned for his portrayal of a principled government clerk in the Hindi film 'Newton,' tasked with conducting polls in Naxal-affected regions of Chhattisgarh, has been designated as a National Icon by the Election Commission. The Election Commission, comprising Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, entered into a memorandum of understanding with Rajkummar Rao to appoint him as an Election Commission icon. This initiative seeks to combat apathy among youth and urban voters, motivating them to participate in elections by recognizing prominent individuals as national icons.
In 'Newton,' Rajkummar Rao played a dedicated government official determined to ensure a free and fair election in Chhattisgarh's Naxal-affected areas, overcoming cynicism and security challenges. The film received widespread acclaim and won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. It was also India's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards (Oscars).
The Election Commission has previously recognized notable figures like actors Pankaj Tripathi and Aamir Khan, as well as sports icons such as Sachin Tendulkar, M S Dhoni, and M C Mary Kom, as national icons in a bid to encourage greater voter participation.
