West Bengal's ruling party, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, is under scrutiny following allegations of receiving crores of rupees and valuable gifts from Darshan Hiranandani, CEO of the Hiranandani Group, in exchange for asking questions in Parliament.
Hiranandani has confirmed these allegations through an affidavit, acknowledging that he provided money and expensive gifts to Moitra. The revelation has put the Trinamool Congress on the defensive, while Mahua Moitra claims that Hiranandani's affidavit was given under pressure from the BJP.
The seriousness of the bribery allegations has prompted Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take action. Birla has stressed that such allegations of taking bribes to raise questions in Parliament are a grave matter, with past records of MPs losing their membership in similar cases. This situation could potentially have significant ramifications for the Trinamool Congress, particularly with the Lok Sabha elections on the horizon. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha has referred the case to the Speaker's Committee of the Parliament, summoning both Mahua Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani to record their statements on October 26.
