West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has directed the state government to grant special remission to 71 convicts during the Durga Puja festival, marking the first time such an initiative has been taken in the state. A Raj Bhavan official gave this information on Saturday.
Additionally, 16 foreign prisoners are under consideration for release with approval from the Central Government. The decision is in line with the Center's scheme to release prisoners as part of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, commemorating India's 75th year of Independence.
Governor Bose emphasized the need for objective criteria in selecting suitable prisoners from among the eligible ones, ensuring a fair and non-arbitrary process. However, no satisfactory response from the state government had been received, prompting the Governor's order for the release of the convicts on humanitarian grounds.
