Bakibur Rehman, a businessman with close ties to a state minister, has been detained following an exhaustive 53-hour interrogation. The arrest took place at Rehman's upscale residence in Baguihati. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), a central investigation agency, has been diligently investigating allegations of corruption related to ration distribution. Rehman, known for his proximity to a state minister, was the primary subject of ED's scrutiny. He resides in a luxurious flat in Baguihati and is believed to share a strong rapport with a minister.
ED officials executed a raid at Rehman's residence in the early hours of Wednesday, and the operation extended until Friday afternoon. Subsequently, Rehman was taken into custody at midnight and transported to the CGO Complex. During the transition, he refrained from answering questions concerning his connections with the minister, merely identifying himself as a businessman. Reports suggest that numerous documents were seized from his residence, a development expected to bolster the ongoing investigation.
Notably, the ED initiated a series of actions across various parts of the state starting Wednesday to address allegations of ration corruption. Their operations included visits to ration shops and the homes of shop owners in Nadia. In addition, the ED conducted raids in Salt Lake and New Town on Wednesday, along with a search operation at Bakibur's Kaikhali residence. The detention of Bakibur Rehman is a significant development in ED's ongoing efforts to combat corruption in ration distribution.
