Online food delivery platform Zomato and restaurant partner McDonald's have been slapped with a penalty of ₹1 lakh by the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum, Jodhpur, for alleged wrongful delivery of non-vegetarian food instead of a vegetarian food order. Additionally, ₹5,000 has been awarded as the cost of litigation.
The penalty and litigation costs are to be shared jointly and severally by both Zomato and McDonald's. Zomato is currently in the process of appealing this order, asserting it has a strong case on merit, and highlights that its role is that of a facilitator for food sales, with the restaurant partner bearing responsibility for service issues and quality.
The District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum (II) Jodhpur imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1 lakh and awarded ₹5,000 as litigation costs for the violation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, involving Zomato and McDonald's. Zomato intends to appeal this order, emphasizing that it serves as a facilitator in food sales, with the restaurant partner being accountable for service-related issues and order quality.
