In a recent operation, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police successfully apprehended two individuals involved in smuggling fake currency notes with a cumulative value of approximately Rs 2 lakh. The arrested suspects have been identified as 29-year-old Saba Sultan and 19-year-old Haleem Shaikh, both hailing from the Malda district in West Bengal. Specifically, Haleem Shaikh is a resident of the Vaishnavnagar police station area within the district, while Saba Sultan resides in Kaliachak.
The state CID, acting on intelligence regarding the suspects' activities, laid a strategic cordon in the Farakka police station area of Murshidabad district. Their careful operation culminated late on Tuesday evening when they successfully apprehended both individuals. Upon searching the suspects, the authorities discovered a significant amount of counterfeit notes, totaling Rs 1,99,000, all of which were in the denomination of Rs 500. Investigations have revealed that the individuals were attempting to smuggle these counterfeit notes into the region. In light of this discovery, a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 489B, 489C, 120B, and 34, and legal actions are currently underway.
The apprehension of these individuals underscores the continued efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat counterfeit currency operations, which pose a significant threat to the financial integrity of the region.
