Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has given the green light for the prosecution of author Arundhati Roy and former University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain in a sedition case dating back to 2010. The accusations stem from their alleged anti-India comments made during a seminar titled 'Azadi: The Only Way' in Delhi. The complaint against them was filed by Sushil Pandit and the Kashmiri Pandit organization 'Roots In Kashmir.'
The Delhi L-G found that a prima facie case existed, charging Arundhati Roy and Sheikh Showkat Hussain with offenses under sections 153A, 153B, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code due to their speeches. Notably, the prosecution under Section 124A (Sedition) of the IPC was not approved, in accordance with a Supreme Court directive from May 2022 that put all pending sedition trials and proceedings on hold.
