Over 4,000 people killed or injured in western Afghanistan earthquakes

Devastating earthquakes that struck western Afghanistan on Saturday have resulted in a grim toll, with officials reporting that more than 4,000 people have been killed or injured as of Monday. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) revealed that two earthquakes, both measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, have taken a devastating toll on the region.

According to ANDMA spokesman Mullah Saiq, "So far, the statistics we have received regarding casualties are unfortunately exceeding 4,000 people. According to our data, in about 20 villages, approximately 1,980 to 2,000 houses have completely collapsed." Relief efforts are underway with the participation of more than 1,000 rescuers organized into 35 rescue teams from various institutions.

On Monday, Afghanistan's acting Prime Minister, Mohammad Hasan Akhund, visited the affected Herat Province to assess the situation. Additionally, China has extended emergency humanitarian assistance by providing $200,000 in cash to the Afghan Red Crescent to support rescue and disaster relief operations.
