India's Parul Chaudhary secured a historic gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China on Tuesday. Chaudhary's remarkable performance unfolded in the women's 5000-meter race, where she found herself trailing in second place on the final lap, with a considerable distance between her and Japan's Ririka Hironaka, the frontrunner.
However, in a gripping last-ditch effort, Chaudhary unleashed an astonishing burst of speed in the closing 10 seconds of the race, surging ahead of Ririka and crossing the finish line in first place, claiming the gold.
This remarkable victory marked Chaudhary's second medal at the Asian Games, following her earlier silver medal in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase event. Her triumph contributed significantly to India's medal tally, securing the nation's 14th gold medal and marking the 64th medal overall. While India celebrates this extraordinary achievement, China maintains its lead on the medals table with a staggering 285 medals, followed by Japan with 127, South Korea with 137, and India at fourth place with its impressive haul of 64 medals.
