Supreme Court Reiterates 2018 Firecracker Ban

The Supreme Court of India has reaffirmed its stance on the 2018 ban on firecrackers, refusing to grant permission to manufacture and use green crackers containing barium. The decision came after the Central Government and firecracker manufacturers presented arguments in favor of these allegedly eco-friendlier fireworks, claiming reduced pollution levels.

However, the apex court has rejected their petition, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of the existing regulations.

Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundaresh presiding over the case asserted that the ban implemented in 2018 would continue to be strictly enforced. While green firecrackers are allowed in other parts of the country, barium-based fireworks and items such as sticks and rockets within firecrackers will remain prohibited.

Justice AS Bopanna underscored that addressing the issue's root causes is essential, as mere actions against firecrackers may not yield the desired results.

The verdict has sparked discussions about air quality and environmental concerns, particularly in Delhi-NCR, as residents gear up for the upcoming festive season.
