In a significant development following the India-Canada diplomatic row, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, held a press conference addressing the allegations made by Canada regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Bagchi expressed India's perspective on the matter, emphasizing several key points.
Bagchi stated that India views Canada's allegations as politically motivated and has communicated its concerns about what it perceives as bias. He noted that Canada has not shared any specific information regarding the Nijjar case, neither in the past nor in the present. India, however, has provided Canada with specific information about criminals and wanted individuals, which has not led to any action on Canada's part.
Bagchi condemned any threats made against Canadian diplomats but highlighted the broader issue of Khalistani terrorism. India has long maintained that Khalistani terrorism is funded by Pakistan and that Canada provides a safe haven for individuals associated with these activities. Bagchi raised questions about the political will to address this issue effectively.
"If there is any country (talking about reputational issues) that needs to look at this is Canada and its growing reputation as a safe haven for terrorists and extremists and for organised crime. I think that's the country that needs to worry about it," Bagchi added.
