Priyanka Gandhi urges central govt to declare Himachal crisis as National Disaster

AICC General Secretary and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, currently touring the flood-ravaged regions of Himachal Pradesh, made a significant visit to the Shiv Temple in Shimla's Summer Hill. The temple site had witnessed a devastating landslide on August 14 that claimed the lives of 20 individuals. During her visit, she emphasized that the situation in Himachal Pradesh could significantly benefit from the Central government declaring it a national disaster.

Accompanied by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Gandhi made a heartfelt assessment of the situation and met the families displaced by the floods in July in Kullu and Manali. Speaking to reporters, she expressed the painful nature of the crisis, acknowledging the immense losses the people had suffered, emphasizing that unity was essential in overcoming this adversity.

Himachal Pradesh has endured unparalleled devastation due to heavy rainfall, with current losses estimated at ₹8,600 crore. Chief Minister Sukhu has expressed concern that this figure could rise to ₹12,000 crore. The deluge-related incidents have tragically claimed the lives of 426 individuals, with 39 people still unaccounted for. Over 2,575 houses have been entirely destroyed, and 11,000 others have suffered partial damage.

Gandhi commended the resilience and solidarity of the people of Himachal Pradesh, acknowledging their mutual support during these trying times. She also noted that the state government had commenced the process of compensating residents for their losses. Gandhi further urged the Central government to declare the situation a national disaster, citing that the magnitude of destruction in Himachal required greater recognition and assistance.
