The Union Cabinet, in its meeting on Tuesday, approved a significant reduction in cooking gas prices, slashing them by ₹200 per cylinder for all domestic consumers. This move was accompanied by an additional subsidy under the Ujjwala scheme, amounting to ₹200, resulting in a total subsidy of ₹400 per cylinder for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
Currently, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs ₹1,103 in New Delhi; following the price reduction, it will cost ₹903 from the upcoming Wednesday. Similarly, for Ujjwala beneficiaries, the price will be ₹703 per cylinder, including the ongoing ₹200 subsidy.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated, "PM Modi has decided ₹200 reduction in the price of domestic LPG cylinders, for all users...this is a gift from PM Narendra Modi, to the women of the country, during the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and Onam."
Highlighting the progress of the Ujjwala scheme, Thakur noted that when the current government came into power in 2014, there were only 14.5 crore domestic LPG connections. Today, that number has surged to 33 crore, with 9.6 crore connections distributed under the Ujjwala scheme.
Furthermore, it was announced that the government would offer free gas connections to 75 lakh women under the Ujjwala scheme, as part of the Raksha Bandhan and Onam celebrations. This initiative will provide these women with a complimentary gas burner, the first cooking gas cylinder, and the necessary pipe. Following the distribution of these additional connections, the total beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme will reach 10.35 crore.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a dig at the central government by tweeting on Tuesday for reducing the price of LPG gas cylinder by Rs 200 in the Union Cabinet meeting. In her tweet, she said "that till now only two meetings of the 'India' alliance were held in the last two months and today we are seeing that the price of LPG gas has been reduced by Rs 200. This is the power of India!"Till now, only TWO meetings have been held in the past TWO months by the INDIA alliance and today, we see that LPG prices have gone down by Rs. 200.
