In a deeply distressing incident that unfolded on Friday, a retired army jawan took the lives of his wife and daughter before ending his own. The incident occurred at their residence on Jeevan Dhar Road in Ward No. 10 of Dumdum Municipality. The family, residing in a multi-storeyed flat, has left the community reeling with shock.
The retired army personnel, identified as Gautam Bandyopadhyay, allegedly carried out the tragic sequence of events. First, he took the life of his daughter named Disha Banerjee, followed by his wife Devika Banerjee. After this heart-wrenching act, he went on to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train at the Madhyamgram station on Friday morning.
The police promptly recovered the bodies and initiated postmortem procedures. Police sources have indicated that the prime reason behind this tragic incident might have been mental depression, suggesting that Gautam's deteriorating mental health could have led to this horrifying act.
The scene inside their residence was chilling, as officers discovered the dead bodies of the wife and daughter, both slain with a vegetable knife. The blood-stained murder weapon was found at the scene. It's believed that Gautam attempted to take his own life by hanging from the ceiling fan, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
Neighbors have painted a picture of a social and friendly woman in Devika, whereas Gautam was known to keep to himself. The police have revealed that several medications were found in the army personnel's flat, potentially pointing to ongoing mental health struggles.
The shocking incident has not only shaken the local community but also serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems.
