After Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about violence against women in Manipur amid national outrage over a video of two Kuki women being paraded naked, Congress president Mallikarjun on Thursday demanded a detailed statement from him in Parliament.
“Manipur is burning, women are being raped, naked, paraded and there is terrible violence. But the Prime Minister remained silent for so long that he only issued a statement in front of Parliament today,” Kharge said in his address to the Rajya Sabha.
Kharge also demanded the immediate resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and the imposition of President's rule in the northeastern state.
The monsoon session of Parliament began with an uproar over violence in Manipur, due to which both houses were adjourned on Monday. Several opposition leaders shouted slogans like "Manipur Manipur" and "Manipur is on fire" as the Lok Sabha assembled at 2 pm.
