SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
In a surprising move, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has given direct entries to Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat for the Asian Games.
Although the ad-hoc panel has already selected wrestlers in other weight categories, trials will be held for all six weight categories and three styles.
The decision comes ahead of the trials starting on Saturday, with the Asian Games scheduled to begin on September 23. Indian team coaches were reportedly not consulted before this decision.
Bajrang Punia, currently training in Kyrgyzstan, was one of the wrestlers who protested for the arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. Vinesh Phogat, training in Hungary, aims to defend her Asian Games gold.
Their direct entries have been met with mixed reactions among other wrestlers, who are considering legal action.
