Brij Bhushan Singh granted interim bail by Delhi court in sexual harassment case

A Delhi court on Tuesday granted two-day interim bail to BJP MP and outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in connection with allegations of sexual harassment by several women wrestlers against him. Anticipatory bail was granted on bonds of Rs 25,000 each.

Brij Bhushan took exception to the verbatim notification of the charges as well as the alleged media trial in the court. In response to the allegations, the court said that the relevant application could be moved.

Vinod Tomar, the suspended WFI assistant secretary, was also granted interim bail. The court will hear the proper bail application on Thursday.

The court also asked media workers to be responsible for their reporting and not misrepresent the judge. "Bad media coverage has consequences and can amount to contempt of court," the court said.

Security has been beefed up outside Brij Bhushan's residence ahead of his appearance at the Rouse Avenue court. As many as six female wrestlers have accused Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual harassment and intimidation.

On 2 June, the Delhi Police filed two FIRs and 10 complaints on allegations of sexual harassment by wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Singh. Complaints against the WFI boss mentioned, among other things, his attempts at inappropriate touching, placing his hands on girls' chests, moving his hands from chest to back and stalking.

The city police on June 15 booked six-time MP Brij Bhushan Singh under sections 354 (assault or criminal violence on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking) and 506 (criminal intimidation ) IPC. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh denied all allegations of sexual abuse and even issued a defiant statement refuting all allegations.
