Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen has criticized the central government's proposal for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), claiming that it is a step towards creating a Hindu nation.

Sen voiced concerns about the underlying intentions behind the UCC and expressed his disagreement with the government's approach to running the country.

During an interaction with journalists in Santiniketan, Sen questioned the introduction of the UCC, highlighting its potential flaws and questioning who would benefit from its implementation. He expressed apprehension that the creation of a Hindu nation might lead to certain avenues being closed and the misuse of Hindu religion in the process.

Sen emphasized the importance of reducing differences and finding ways to promote unity, rather than seeking to impose a uniform law across the country. He stated that a one-size-fits-all approach cannot address all the problems and urged for a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural and social fabric of India.

Earlier, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also expressed objections to the UCC, citing the need to preserve the country's unity in diversity. Banerjee raised concerns about the potential erasure of regional identities, food habits, languages, and religious practices, emphasizing that the TMC would always act in accordance with the country's constitution.

The Muslim Law Board has already expressed opposition to the UCC, with top officials holding a meeting and announcing their disagreement with the proposed code.
