Delhi Metro exemption ends at state borders: Arrests possible for violating UP and Haryana excise laws

People carrying two bottles of liquor in the Delhi Metro are at risk of arrest if they disembark at stations in Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, or Faridabad. The Uttar Pradesh Excise Department has taken action following Delhi Metro's exemption announcement and displayed warnings at Noida and Ghaziabad stations.

The authorities emphasize that importing alcohol from other states is illegal and can result in revenue loss. While an open bottle of liquor is permitted, those found with two bottles will face prosecution. The department urges passengers to comply with the law to avoid unnecessary trouble and legal consequences.

According to Section 63 of the Uttar Pradesh Excise Act, if caught, it will be treated as a case of smuggling of liquor and you may be jailed under the Excise Act. Following the announcement of the exemption by Delhi Metro, the Uttar Pradesh Excise Department team became active.

The department has also put up such warnings at Noida and Ghaziabad metro stations. Similarly, in Gurugram and Faridabad, the Excise Department warned metro passengers against their state's law.

According to Excise Department officials, it is illegal to import alcohol from any state as per Uttar Pradesh excise policy. Due to the difference in excise duty, this was described in the policy as a loss of revenue. However, it was agreed that no action would be taken against anyone who brought an open bottle of liquor from any other state.

Regarding the exemption for Delhi Metro, Noida District Excise Officer Subodh Srivastava said that the exemption for Delhi Metro will be applicable only in Delhi. In the UP, the UP's own excise tax law will apply and will be followed according to this law. He said that after the new Delhi Metro regulation, the department has increased monitoring at Uttar Pradesh stations.

According to officials, it is considered a non-chargeable crime by law. That is why along with imposing a fine, all these people also had to be sent to jail.
