Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
Speculations about Manipur's Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepping down have been put to rest as he clarified on Friday that he will not be resigning from his post after a torn resignation letter purportedly written by Singh surfaced online.
Earlier in the day, protests broke out on the streets of Manipur as news spread about Chief Minister N Biren Singh's scheduled meeting with the governor to offer his resignation.
Hundreds of women took to the streets in Imphal, expressing their support for Singh and chanting slogans against his resignation. They prevented him from meeting the State Governor and tore up the resignation letter in a display of solidarity. Visuals of the protest have circulated widely on the internet.
The situation in Manipur has drawn criticism from Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. Kharge called on the Prime Minister to take action by dismissing Chief Minister N Biren Singh if he genuinely cares about the situation.
Kharge emphasized that the BJP-led government's attempts to downplay the situation through propaganda cannot conceal its failure to effectively handle the Manipur violence.
