SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A special court on Wednesday awarded the death penalty to the accused in the brutal rape and murder of an eight-year-old boy in the Ayana police station area.
Gautam Singh Dauhare was convicted of raping a minor and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO).
Police Superintendent Charu Nigan said the charges were laid within eight days after the tragedy occurred on March 25 this year. He said it was important to catch such "dreaded criminals" in society to stop atrocities on the innocent.
The judge ruled on Wednesday that this kind of heinous act is not acceptable in any culture or religion and that in Indian culture, women are at the core of every religion.
The incident took place when a minor girl was on a rampage in the field to graze cattle and was kidnapped, raped, and later strangled by a thug.
Additional Director General of Police Kanpur rewarded the police team with Rs 25,000 for their swift action in the case as the trial was completed within three months after they arrested the accused.
