Panchayat elections are being held in West Bengal, in which violence is being witnessed like every time. Meanwhile, there was a stir in Birbhum district of West Bengal due to the receipt of bombs for the second consecutive day. Today 28 crude bombs have been recovered from Shantiniketan located in Birbhum.
These bombs were kept in two buckets. The police have started investigation by taking possession of all the bombs. There is an atmosphere of panic among the local people after receiving information about the bomb for the second consecutive day. A day earlier also, 20 bombs were recovered from a house behind the TMC office in Birbhum. On receiving information about the bombs, the CID team reached the spot and defused these bombs.
West Bengal has become a battleground due to the elections and violence has been reported from different parts of the state. On June 16, Governor CV Anand Bose visited violence-hit Bhangor in 24 Parganas district. Violence broke out in Bhangor after a clash over nomination. During this, the governor had said that political violence should end. Election should be won on the basis of vote count and not on the basis of dead bodies.
In view of the panchayat elections to be held in West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court had on June 15 directed the State Election Commission to deploy central forces in all districts within 48 hours. The State Election Commission had said to follow the order. At the same time, the West Bengal government has filed a review petition against the order. Elections will be held for 928 seats in 22 Zilla Parishads, 9,730 Panchayat Samiti seats and 63,229 Gram Panchayat seats during the West Bengal panchayat elections.
Around 5.67 crore people are eligible to vote in the elections. The three-tier Panchayati Raj system consists of Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zilla Parishad.
