KMC to collect details of parking charges of different states to increase parking fee

Kolkata Corporation, in an effort to address traffic congestion and environmental pollution caused by the increasing number of private cars in the city, has undertaken a survey to examine parking charges in other states across the country.

The survey aims to gather comparative data on parking fees and practices in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kochi, which have larger road networks than Kolkata.

With the current parking rates in Kolkata being relatively low compared to other cities, the corporation seeks to explore the possibility of increasing parking fees. The survey findings will be discussed with the state government before any decisions are made.

Mayor Firhad Hakim has emphasized the need for consultation with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure that the proposed changes align with the government's vision and goals.

Over the past year, the Kolkata Corporation had conducted several meetings regarding a potential increase in parking fees. However, after facing criticism and public outcry, the new parking rates that were implemented from April 1 were subsequently withdrawn

. At present, the parking charges in Kolkata stand at Rs 10 per hour for four-wheelers, Rs 5 per hour for motorbikes and scooters, and Rs 20 per hour for buses and other goods vehicles.
