The recent attack on Minister Birbaha Hansda and his convoy during Abhishek Banerjee's 'Trinamool Nabjbar' program at Shalbani in West Midnapore has led to a series of developments.
Police have registered cases, including one filed by Hansda's driver, and the CID has initiated an investigation into the incident. Another worker leader has been arrested, while Kurmi supporters are protesting against the arrest in the Jangal Mahal area.
During the incident on May 26, Kurmi supporters allegedly protested at Garh Shalbani, shouting 'Jai Shri Ram' and pelting bricks and stones at several leaders and workers, including Minister Birbaha Hansda. His driver suffered severe eye injuries, and multiple individuals sustained minor injuries.
Abhishek Banerjee, after the incident, spoke to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and demanded a statement from Kurmi within 48 hours. Abhishek Banerjee mentioned that the Kurmi community clarified its position within 18 hours of the attack.
The police made arrests in connection with the incident, with four Kurmi leaders, Rajesh Mahto, Shivaji Mahto, Rakesh Mahto, and Anubhav Mahto, being arrested one by one. On Sunday night, another individual named Nishikant Mahato was also arrested, bringing the total number of arrests to nine.
The CID has taken over the investigation and collected relevant documents from Jhargram police station regarding the convoy attack.
In response to the arrests, protest marches have started in Kurmi community villages across Jhargram district, demanding the unconditional release of the Kurmi community leaders. The protesters claim that the leaders have been falsely charged and should be released without any conditions.
