The Calcutta High Court has ordered a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into the death of two children in police firing on students who were protesting the appointment of an Urdu teacher instead of science in Dadibhit High School located in Uttar Dinajpur Islampur area.
A single bench of Justice Rajashekhar Mantha passed this order on Wednesday. Along with this, he has directed the state government to provide immediate financial assistance to the victim's family.
In September 2018, students started protesting against the appointment of an Urdu teacher in the school, after which the police resorted to lathicharge instead of handling it peacefully. There were allegations of stone pelting and later two students named Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Burman were killed in the firing. Locals and families claimed that the police had resorted to firing and insisted on demanding a CBI probe.
The school was closed for about two months. After this, the Calcutta High Court was approached in the case.
