Aam Aadmi Party’s Shelly Oberoi was unanimously elected as the mayor of Delhi on Wednesday after BJP’s Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination during the polling at the MCD headquarters. BJP’s deputy mayor contestant Soni Pandey also withdrew her name following which AAP’s Aaley Mohammad Iqbal secured the seat.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today held elections for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The outcome of the election is likely to have significant implications for the composition and functioning of the Standing Committee, which plays a vital role in local civic administration and is responsible for making important decisions related to the development and management of the city.
Despite the lack of adequate numbers in the House, the BJP has fielded Shikha Rai and Soni Pandey as candidates for the Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral elections in MCD. Shikha Rai is currently serving as councilor from Greater Kailash-1 ward, while Soni Pandey represents Sonia Vihar ward in North East Delhi in the civic body.
AAP named Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal as mayor and deputy mayor candidates for MCD elections. to renominate the two and the decision was taken by Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal in recognition of their performance in the MCD government in Delhi.
The position of mayor in the capital of the republic has five one-year terms of office on a rotating basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category.
