Calcutta HC lawyer reports theft, arrest made with CCTV Footage

A Calcutta High Court lawyer, Sayantika Mitri, residing in the Khabar Bangur area, reported a theft to the Laketown police station on March 27. She alleged that on March 26, her housekeeper Kiran Hawaldar witnessed a woman running away from her house in the afternoon.

Despite chasing her, the housekeeper was unable to catch the thief, who had reportedly stolen Mitri's purse containing money.

The Laketown police station examined CCTV footage of the surrounding area, which showed a woman fleeing from Mitri's house. The police in the Dum Dum area subsequently launched an investigation into the incident, leading to the arrest of a 55-year-old woman named Amambiya Bibi, who was found in possession of four mobile phones, six watches, a purse, and some jewellery.

The suspect was arrested from Dumdum, and the recovered items, including the stolen jewellery, were seized. The police are also investigating whether Bibi is part of a larger theft racket. The suspect is due to appear in Bidhannagar court, where the police will seek her remand.
