The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) of West Bengal has installed a 24-hour electric vehicle (EV) charging unit at Sampanna Parkomat in Alipore.
The charging unit can charge up to 50 electric vehicles simultaneously and is expected to benefit electric cab drivers who need to charge their vehicles at any time of the day. Hidco plans to set up two more EV charging stations at the parkomat soon.
The ground floor of the parkomat will be used for EV charging purposes, while the parking space will be available for both EVs and conventional vehicles at normal rates. The charging rate has been fixed at INR 12 per kilowatt, and Hidco will operate the charging unit.
Meanwhile, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is working to install and operate 10 more EV charging stations in New Town, which will offer charging units at comparatively lower rates than the privately operated ones. NKDA had earlier set up 11 EV charging stations in various locations across New Town.
With EVs predicted to be the preferred mode of transport in the future, the demand for fast-charging stations is expected to increase.
