The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by job seekers in India in securing gainful employment
Protests erupted in Howrah, West Bengal, on Wednesday, as job seekers took to the streets in a long march seeking employment opportunities. The protesters alleged that the police obstructed their procession, despite receiving permission from the court to hold the march.
The group, mainly consisting of those seeking Group-D jobs, had planned to commence the march from Howrah. However, the police reportedly began taking job seekers into custody as early as 5 am, and many who had taken refuge in an ashram were arrested. Police picketing continued throughout the night, leaving the protesters frustrated and confused. "We stayed overnight in an ashram.
Today the long march was to begin from Howrah. But before dawn, the police started arresting us. Why did they arrest us despite the court's permission?" asked Ran Sarkar, one of the job aspirants.
