A disabled woman, Ranju Devi (26), and her 15-day-old son were burnt to death on Sunday when their house caught fire due to a short circuit at Belwa village under Piprahi block in Sheohar district, police said.
At least six cattle were also burnt in the fire and the house burnt to ashes. The victim was the wife of one Rambabu Paswan.
"The incident took place around 11.30 am when Ranju and her son were inside the house. Another family had gone to work in a nearby field," Piprahi police station SHO Suraj Kumar Gupta said.
"Two fire brigades went to the scene to put out the flames. However, the woman and her child died by the time the fire brigade arrived," he said.
Gupta added that the woman gave birth to her son through caesarean section. “After giving birth to a child, she came to her married sister's house. At the time of the incident, Ranju's four-year-old daughter was playing outside the house. Five other houses in the vicinity were also damaged in the fire,” the SHO added.
