13-year-old girl fights off, escapes kidnap attempt on UP train

A 13-year-old girl, who was returning with her parents to the Kanpur Subedarganj Express after visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu, was allegedly attacked by a man on a moving train in UP while she was sleeping in the middle berth of a sleeper coach.

Police said on Friday: "An unknown man suddenly covered her mouth and tried to take her away, but she resisted him with all her might."

After hearing her scream, the others in the carriage woke up and caught hold of the accused. He was then handed over to the TTE and the train guard, but later they managed to give a slip.

The incident took place between Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar around 2 am on Wednesday. DSP (GRP) Moradabad, Devi Dayal, said, "Initially, the family did not want to file a complaint. But after they reached their destination, the girl's father lodged a complaint with the police. A case was then registered at the GRP police station in Muzaffarnagar on Thursday evening."

Superintendent of Police, GRP (Muzaffarnagar), Sanjay Kumar Yadav, added, "The unidentified accused has been booked under IPC sections 363 (punishment for kidnapping) and 511 (punishment for attempt to commit offence). Police teams have been formed to nab him. It is ongoing further investigation.'
