Delhi-NCR likely to get moderate showers, while northeast will experience heavy rain

The three northeastern states of Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to receive very heavy rainfall from March 19 to March 22 under the influence of a cyclonic circulation in the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted.

Meanwhile, the Delhi-NCR region will continue to receive light showers with generally cloudy skies on Sunday as the minimum temperature in the national capital dropped to 15.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below the seasonal average, after heavy rains lashed the city on Saturday.

According to IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy, the severity of the storms is beginning to increase as the western disturbance interacts with the low-level wind regions of India that are created when temperatures soar during the summer.

Light rainfall accompanied by thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds is likely to prevail over the Western Himalayan region and parts of Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the next two days. Parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh will witness thunderstorms with gusty winds, lightning and hail from March 19 to March 21, the weather bulletin noted.

“The Western Disturbance is approaching and due to this an induced cyclonic circulation has formed over Rajasthan. Due to the combined effect of both conditions, the state is receiving abundant moisture from the Bay of Bengal,” meteorologist HP Chandra told.

Earlier on Saturday in Maharashtra, heavy rains along with hailstorms damaged standing crops in several villages of Latur, an official said.
