The arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jitendra Tiwari in the blanket scandal has heightened tension in the city. North Thane police arrested former mayor Jitendra Tiwari on Saturday night and brought him to the police station and produced him in a special court in Asansol on Sunday morning.
Jitendra Tiwari, who was surrounded by police before appearing in the court, said that not the Trinamool government or the police, but the people of Asansol will take the final decision. During this, he also pointed towards the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Jitendra Tiwari made his own plea in court and said that the Supreme Court is going to hear this case tomorrow i.e. Monday, so he should be sent to police custody for two days. After that, on the basis of the Supreme Court's decision, if necessary, he should be sent to police custody for 12 days. The judge has reserved judgment for now.
The police have registered a case against Tiwari under Indian Penal Code Sections 304 (involuntary manslaughter), 308 (attempt to involuntary manslaughter), 34 (jointly organizing an incident). On the other hand, Agnimitra Paul has called for a siege of the police station regarding the arrest of the BJP leader. However, the ruling party said the BJP leader's arrest was legal.
It is noteworthy that on December 14 last year, a blanket distribution ceremony was organized on the initiative of Jitendra Tiwari's wife Chaitali Tiwari, the councilor of Ward No. 27 of Asansol. Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari was also present there. After his departure from the program, there was a scramble to get the blankets, after which many people lost their lives in the stampede.
Due to this incident, Tiwari couple came under criticism. Police said no permission was taken from them to organize the event and the matter went to court. The police have questioned Jitendra and his wife many times in this regard. After this, on Saturday, the Intelligence Department of Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate and the police of Asansol North Police Station conducted a joint operation and arrested Jitendra Tiwari from Yamuna Expressway in Noida. From there Jitendra was taken to Dumdum Government Hospital via Dumdum Airport and after a medical examination, police brought him to Asansol.
