Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has tipped Hardik Pandya to take over from Rohit Sharma as team India's limited-overs captain after that the 2023 World Cup. Hardik Pandya has been making heads turn with his captaincy, not just in the IPL, but also when he has taken the role for India. The all-rounder has been the name suggested by many to be the next captain in the limited-overs format for the national team.
Pandya will be leading India in the first ODI against Australia, with Rohit taking a leave for personal reasons. Gavaskar, as quoted by the media, said that Pandya as the captain gives a sense of comfort to the rest of the team.
Gavaskar also said that the all-rounder encourages the players to go about with their natural game. Gavaskar also commented on Hardik Pandya's thinking to promote himself up the order, especially in the Indian Premier League, when his team needed some momentum and push.
“What you see with Hardik Pandya as a captain is a sense of comfort with the rest of the team. Maybe, it’s the way he handles the players, puts his arm around the players. He just seems to give the players a sense of comfort. That’s so important to give a player a sense of comfort so that he can go and play his natural game. I think he encourages them, which is a wonderful sign," said Gavaskar.
