SS Rajamouli says Oscar win for Naatu Naatu will 'accelerate' RRR sequel script

SS Rajamouli revealed that RRR, who won the Oscar for Best Original Song for 'Naatu Naatu' at the 95th Academy Awards on Monday, has fast-tracked the script for the sequel.

At the Oscars, Telugu hit Naatu Naatu, composed by MM Keeravaani and written by Chandrabose, won the award for original song, making SS Rajamouli's RRR the first Indian feature film to win an Oscar.

When Rajamouli attended the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party with the song's composer and his cousin MM Keeravani, he was asked if winning the Oscar accelerated the process of his sequel. He laughed and told Variety, “Obviously [winning the Oscar] will bring some momentum to the script. Definitely yes, we'll see." Meanwhile, Keeravaani shared that talking about the progress of the sequel was a "tricky question".

Last year, Rajamouli revealed that he had no plans for a sequel to the film. Since then, RRR has received massive worldwide recognition, prompting the director to reconsider.

He told: “After the international success, when the subject came up again, my cousin [MM Keeravaani] – who is also part of my core team – came up with an idea that we felt like, ‘Oh my God, this is a great idea. That's an idea worth pursuing.'"

The director revealed that he also asked his father to start working on the script for the sequel and immediately expanded the idea. He shared, “He is currently seriously working on the story; he does it. But once that script is done, we really look at how to make it, when to make it and how to bring it to the screen.”

RRR stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR were also present at the Vanity Fair Oscars after party. A fictional pre-independence story, RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) follows two real-life Indian revolutionaries - Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) - in the 1920s.
