Union Cabinet approves 'One Nation, One Election' Bill: Reports
The police have started paperwork to bring the politician-turned-don Atiq Ahmad, who is lodged in Gujarat's Sabarmati Jail, to UP.
Senior officials, who did not wish to be quoted, said that based on the information and evidence collected so far, Atiq has been identified as the main conspirator in the murder of Umesh Pal and two police constables. “We have started the paperwork and will soon apply for a B-order (production order) to the Gujarat jail where Atiq is lodged. We are working to expedite the cases against him in the state,” the officer said.
Atiq was transferred to Sabarmati Jail in June 2019. On 22 April 2019, the Supreme Court ordered his transfer to a high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of masterminding the kidnapping and assault of real estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal in prison.
On 28 December 2018, Jaiswal filed an FIR stating that he was kidnapped from Lucknow and taken to jail, where he was assaulted by Atiq and his aides and forced to transfer his business to them.
The incident took place in Deoria Jail in UP. Later, the case was handed over to the CBI, which filed a charge sheet in the case on 31 December 2020, indicting Atiq and his son Umar along with others.
