Koustav Bagchi has been granted bail on a bond of 1 thousand rupees. He appeared in the Bankshal court on the same day, where his hearing caused heated arguments, both inside and outside the courtroom, with Congress workers and supporters protesting his arrest.
Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya represented Koustav in court and questioned why the police had raided his client's home in the middle of the night when the Supreme Court has ordered against such actions. Bhattacharya argued that most of the charges against Koustav are bailable and criticized the police for arresting government employees and lawyers.
Bhattacharya argued that there was no notice under Section 41, which would allow for an arrest, and questioned why the police had raided his client's home at night. He also questioned the fundamental right to sleep and criticized the investigating officer.
He applied for Koustav's bail and expressed concern for the safety of lawyers, who he claimed were being attacked by the police in a democratic country. The counter-government lawyer argued that there were statements made to cause public disturbance, which needed investigation.
After a back-and-forth between the lawyers from both parties, the judge reserved the order, which caused an uproar in the courtroom. However, the judge later granted bail to Koustav, which was met with relief by his supporters.
