No more bus racing, overtaking in Kolkata! new tracking technology introduced

Collisions between buses on the same route have long been a cause of concern in Kolkata, often resulting in tragic loss of lives. In response, the transport department is introducing a bus tracking system aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring better monitoring.

Twelve private bus routes have been selected for a pilot project where buses will be tracked using modern technology. Soumitra Mohan, Principal Secretary of the Transport Department, announced the initiative at a meeting with private bus organizations held on Tuesday evening. Bus owners will provide drivers with mobile phones, while the transport department will cover the internet and other operational costs.

The tracking system will function through a QR code installed inside each bus. Drivers will scan the code before leaving the stand, transmitting critical details such as the bus route, location, speed, and adherence to traffic norms to both the bus owners and the Lalbazar Traffic Department. This data will help authorities identify violations like racing or overtaking and take immediate action by notifying nearby traffic outposts.

Moreover, the tracking system will be integrated with the 'Yatri Saathi' app, enabling passengers to track bus movement in real-time. Transport officials believe this initiative will enhance safety and improve the efficiency of bus operations.

However, private bus operators have raised financial concerns. They recently invested in Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and now face the additional cost of providing mobile phones to drivers. Given the declining profitability in bus operations and reduced passenger numbers, operators have requested partial financial support from the transport department.

The Chief Secretary of the Transport Department has assured stakeholders that these concerns will be addressed, promising a review of the financial implications. “For now, this tracking system will be launched on a trial basis. We have been asked to provide information and data,” said Titu Saha, General Secretary of the City Suburban Bus Service.

If successful, this initiative could set a precedent for safer and more regulated public transport in Kolkata, offering both accountability and convenience to passengers and operators alike.
