Indian Railways will implement a new timetable starting January 1, 2025. The current "Trains at a Glance" (TAG) edition will remain effective until December 31, 2024. The updated timetable includes the introduction of several new services, including 136 Vande Bharat Express trains, two Amrit Bharat Express trains, and the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (Vande Metro). These new services are part of Indian Railways’ extensive efforts to modernize the rail network, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the passenger experience.
The revised timetable represents a change from the usual update cycle, where a new timetable is typically released by June 30 each year, coming into effect on July 1. In 2025, however, the new timetable will be released and come into effect from January 1, 2025. The revision aims to align with the ongoing expansion and upgrades to the Indian Railways network, which includes adding high-speed trains and boosting connectivity across the country.
A major highlight of the 2025 timetable will be the launch of 136 Vande Bharat Express trains. These trains are designed to offer faster, more comfortable, and eco-friendly travel options, with features such as improved seating, onboard amenities, and greater energy efficiency. The Vande Bharat Express trains will connect major cities, reducing travel time between key destinations. Additionally, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (Vande Metro) will be introduced to provide high-frequency commuter services connecting metropolitan areas, catering to the growing demand for urban transport.
In addition to the introduction of new trains, Indian Railways is also focusing on enhancing services for large-scale events. Specifically, for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the Indian Railways plans to operate approximately 3,000 special trains to accommodate the expected surge in passenger numbers. The IRCTC has also made arrangements to provide shelter for over 100,000 people during the event. A luxury tent city, known as Mahakumbh Gram, will be established near the Triveni Sangam to ensure a comfortable stay for pilgrims and visitors. These measures are part of the efforts to provide efficient and reliable services during major religious gatherings.
The new timetable will also feature updates to the overall scheduling system, designed to optimize train operations and reduce delays. With the addition of the Vande Bharat Express and other services, Indian Railways aims to reduce congestion, improve travel times, and provide better connectivity to both urban and rural regions. The changes reflect the Indian Railways' continued focus on modernization, with an emphasis on passenger comfort, safety, and operational efficiency.
