French president to be Republic Day chief guest after Biden's cancellation

India is currently engaged with French authorities to extend an invitation to President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest for the Republic Day parade in January 2024. This would mark the sixth instance of a French President gracing the Republic Day celebrations, highlighting the enduring diplomatic ties between India and France.

The decision to invite President Macron comes after initial plans involving leaders of the Quad countries for Republic Day celebrations were altered due to the unavailability of US President Joe Biden.

The invitation to the French President underscores the robust strategic partnership between India and France, spanning defense, space, and nuclear cooperation. This move follows PM Narendra Modi's recent visit to France, where he participated in the Bastille Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour, strengthening the bilateral relationship.
