Sohana Mondal (14), a Class VIII student from a private residential school in Murshidabad, was found dead on Tuesday. Her family has alleged negligence and accused the school of hiding details surrounding her death.
Sohana, a resident of Badshahnagar village in Naoda, was taken to Amtala Hospital on Tuesday morning by school authorities in a critical condition. Due to her deteriorating health, doctors referred her to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead.
According to the family, Sohana passed away on Monday night, but the school delayed informing them and took her to the hospital the following morning. They further claim they were not notified about her condition until after her death and were denied access to see her body before it was sent to the morgue.
A teacher from the school, who requested anonymity, said that Sohana allegedly got into an argument with a classmate and was later found unconscious in her room. The teacher claimed she attempted to hang herself and was rushed to the hospital after being discovered.
Sohana’s maternal uncle, Manoj Khan, stated that she spoke with family members on Monday night and showed no signs of distress. He said the family was first informed on Tuesday morning that she had fallen ill and was being taken to the hospital. Later, they were informed of her death and learned that her body had already been sent to the morgue.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the cause of death. The investigation will examine the events leading up to the student’s death and the allegations raised by the family.
